On September 25, 2026, the IRS issued IR-2026-114, announcing a new official mobile app that replaces IRS2Go and expands access to selected account services.

What the IRS Announced

The free IRS app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Taxpayers can sign in securely to use selected features from their IRS Individual Online Account on a mobile device.

People who already use IRS2Go do not need to download a separate app. According to the IRS, users with automatic updates enabled will receive the new app through the normal update process.

Services Available in the App

The initial release includes options to:

  • Check refund and amended-return status
  • View available balance information
  • Make payments and review payment activity
  • View selected notices and letters
  • Access available tax records and transcripts
  • Manage certain profile and communication preferences
  • Access an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)

The IRS said it plans to add more capabilities over time. Availability can vary by account and service.

What the App Does Not Replace

The app extends selected Individual Online Account features; it does not replace IRS.gov or the agency’s online accounts. The IRS website continues to provide forms, guidance, tools, and broader services, while Business Tax Account and Tax Pro Account remain available through IRS.gov.

Telephone and in-person assistance also remain available for taxpayers who need individualized help or cannot resolve an issue through self-service.

How to Avoid Look-Alike Apps

Use the verified links on IRS.gov or official listings in the Apple App Store and Google Play. The IRS cautions taxpayers not to enter sensitive information through unsolicited texts, emails, pop-ups, advertisements, or links that claim to provide account access.

If a message or app seems questionable, avoid its links and start from IRS.gov to locate the official app.

Why It Matters for Small Business Owners

A sole proprietor may be able to use the app for selected services tied to an individual IRS account, such as checking a balance, making a payment, or retrieving an available transcript. Business Tax Account services are not being moved into the app at launch, so business-specific account tasks may still require IRS.gov.

Simple-C helps Schedule C filers keep income, expenses, and supporting records organized — so the records used for tax preparation remain separate from account access and payment tools.
